Staatskapelle Dresden

The musical polymath Jörg Widmann is one of the most remarkable and versatile artists of his generation, combining many talents as a clarinettist, conductor and composer. As the current Capell-Compositeur and Capell-Virtuos of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, he will be featured in a special concert with the young members of the Giuseppe Sinopoli Academy of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden in the Festspielhaus Hellerau.

Jörg Widmann is Principal Guest Conductor of the NDR Radio Philharmonic and Associate Conductor of the Munich Chamber Orchestra. Regular guest conducting engagements take him to the Oslo Philharmonic, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. In February 2026, Jörg Widmann performed the clarinet concerto “Zones of Blue” by Olga Neuwirth, dedicated to him, with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle. Other clarinet concertos dedicated to him and premiered by him include Wolfgang Rihm’s “Musik für Klarinette und Orchester” (1999) and Aribert Reimann’s “Cantus” (2006). Conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Kent Nagano and Andris Nelsons regularly perform Jörg Widmann’s compositions with orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic and the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. Since 2026, he has been the new Artistic Director of the Lucerne Festival Academy.
