With a dancer’s grace, a spirit of experimentation and a zest for life, Evi Filippou wields four mallets across a vibraphone! Through her compositions, she nimbly creates musical universes that defy comparison. Whether at the Berlin State Opera, with the NDR Big Band or the quintet InEvitable – with whom she won the German Jazz Prize – her own voice always shines through. In our conversation with Demian Kappenstein, we discover just how much growing up in Greece has played a part in this.

Biography

Evi Filippou is a Greek vibraphonist, percussionist, performer and composer based in Berlin, who works at the intersection of composition, improvisation and global folk traditions. Her acclaimed project inEvitable was awarded the German Jazz Prize for Debut Album of the Year in 2023. She collaborates with a diverse range of artists across Europe, for example in the duo Filippou & Lucaciu or with Uli Kempendorff, Julius Gawlik and the Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra. She is also a member of the n ï m Dance Company and the association Vincentino e.V. – Culture Empowers Children in Berlin.
