Shout Aloud
Yasmeen Godder Company & Dikla
“Shout Aloud” combines the creativity and energy of two outstanding artists. Choreographer Yasmeen Godder, who thrills audiences worldwide with her pieces, joins forces with Dikla, one of Israel’s best-known singers. “Shout Aloud” is inspired by Dikla’s first, ground-breaking album “Ahava Musica” from 2000, on which the artist mixes classical Arabic music with energetic dance electronics and experimental rock. Together with eight female dancers, Godder brings a female perspective on perseverance, resistance, grief, anger, helplessness, rebellion and solidarity to life as inspired by Dikla’s music and lyrics. They are joined live by Dikla herself and a nine-piece music ensemble, which creates a moving acoustic framework.

Yasmeen Godder was born in Jerusalem and grew up in New York City. She studied dance there and was deeply involved in the Manhattan punk scene. In 1999 she returned to Israel and founded her studio and dance company in Jaffa. As a choreographer, she has toured worldwide since 1997 – including the Lincoln Center Festival, Tokyo International Festival, Montpellier Dance Festival, tanzhaus nrw, Kunstenfestivaldesarts and Künstler*innenhaus Mousonturm – and has won numerous prizes, including a Bessie Award and the Shimon Perez Prize for her outstanding contribution to German-Israeli relations. Godder first worked with the singer Dikla in 2001, when she used the hit ‘Boker Tov’ (Good Morning) from Dikla’s first album in her piece ‘HALL’. Her studio in Jaffa remains a central base for Godder to this day. It is a place of research and production as well as a meeting place where she teaches professional training and initiates projects with various groups of people, such as Parkinson’s patients and the Arab-Jewish community. These projects have had a great influence on Yasmeen Godder’s artistic practice.
Dikla is a music producer, composer, actress and one of Israel’s most successful singers. Growing up in the desert city of Be’er Sheva as the child of an Egyptian-Iraqi family, she received no academic musical training. The sounds in her parents’ home served as her training: songs by the great Arab singers Oum Kulthum and Farid al-Atrash, the representatives of early Israeli pop and US-American beats. These influences and more come together in Dikla’s music, so that the singer has been described as a combination of Oum Kulthum, Rita and Madonna, as the diva of Hebrew-Arab rock. Dikla first became known as a songwriter for the renowned singers Sharit Hadad, Dudu Aharon and Shlomo Artzi. Although her first album ‘Ahava Musica’ was immediately voted one of the five best albums of the year in 2001, Dikla only made her breakthrough as a singer in 2014 with her fourth album ‘Ve Im Preda’. In addition to intensive concert tours and working with Yasmeen Godder, Dikla is currently playing the great Egyptian diva Oum Kulthum in a musical in Tel Aviv.
