Guided Tours
Guided tours through the Festspielhaus Hellerau
Hellerau is home to the first German garden city which, together with the Festspielhaus and the Deutsche Werkstätten, forms a unique triad of works, life and art. The Festspielhaus was built in 1911 according to a design by the architect Heinrich Tessenow. With its clarity and functional structure, the building became a directional building for modernism and was a visionary counter throw to the traditional theatre buildings.
Today, HELLERAU – European Centre of the Arts continues the heyday of the building from 1911 to 1914. The interdisciplinary co-production and guest performance house offers around 350 events each year in the genres of dance, music, theatre, performance, media art and visual arts.
Every Friday 12:30 h
Duration: approx. 1 hour Festspielhaus
Price: € 6/4
For tours that fall on holidays, registration is requested at least three days in advance. The guided tour is offered in German.
Due to rehearsal and production schedules, there may be restrictions on access to the rooms.

In search of BALANCE
Based on the social reform ideas at the beginning of the 20th century, living and working, education and culture were to be harmoniously combined in the first German garden city. A great idea. A social synthesis of the arts. Living and working in harmony.
What is left of it over 100 years later? Where does the myth live on? In the stories of the residents? In their way of life? In the architecture, the urban space? And what does good living mean to us today? What about our work-life balance? Rhythmic balance? Balancing on the edge? Or free falling at every step?
Guided by a voice, the audience – equipped with mp3 players and headphones – explores the winding paths and architectural testimonies of the neighborhood. In search of their own BALANCE, participants encounter the individual stories of residents, talking garden fences, and beat-setting sounds of the neighborhood.
