Discoveries between tradition and modernity

The young Tessenow, who was himself a temporary resident of the garden city, helped to shape the overall work of art that was Hellerau. From 1910, he planned numerous residential buildings and micro-apartments in Hellerau. He developed the ‘Tessenow Wall’ for quick construction. In 1911, his first major project, the Festspielhaus Hellerau, was built, which implemented the visions of the stage designer Adolphe Appia and the music educator Emile Jaques-Dalcroze in a spatial structure that impresses with its clarity and functional structure.

On the tour through the garden city and festival hall, you will explore the arc of Tessenow’s work, from traditional small-scale house building to the festival hall, which became a trendsetter for modernism.

The approximately two-hour tour begins in the western side building at a model and then continues to the garden city and the Festspielhaus.
