SHIRO
NONOTAK
The audiovisual concert project ‘SHIRO’ (Japanese for ‘white’) by the Japanese-French duo NONOTAK will be presented at numerous major international festivals and in a wide variety of spaces and architectures. In HELLERAU, the two performers Noemi Schipfer and Takami Nakamoto will acoustically and visually remeasure the Großer Saal and celebrate it in an immersive performance.
NONOTAK is a Paris-based Japanese-French duo that thematises, explores and presents immersive experiences through the interaction of sound, light and space. Noemi Schipfer and Takami Nakamoto, who have a background in illustration and architecture, are an example of a transversal use of technology in audiovisual installations and performances. Their artworks, often dreamy performances and installations, resemble op-art, kinetic artworks and optical illusions in which they develop complex and geometric patterns and create neural brain sparks.
Takami Nakamoto: “During my architecture studies, I often found myself designing architecture that was so immersive that I was blurring the boundaries between huge-scale sculptures and architecture with particular attention to the sound aspect. I like artists like Eduardo Chillida, who creates giant sculptures that often play with the relation of a space’s boundaries and sound. When we started NONOTAK, we had this vision of experimenting with Space, Light and Sound in a way anyone could relate. Light is such a strong material that it can greatly impact people’s emotions. Space is a notion anyone can understand and feel, and we thought disrupting it with light and sound would give us a lot to play with. Sound dictates the narration of all the immersive experiences we are building.” (CLOT mag 2019)

NONOTAK is a creative duo founded in late 2011 by visual artist Noemi Schipfer and light and sound artist Takami Nakamoto. NONOTAK work with light and sound installations and performances to create ethereal, immersive and dream-like environments that envelop, challenge and amaze the viewer. They utilise Nakamoto’s approach to space, light and sound and Schipfer’s experience with kinetic visual and geometric drawings. The result is a duo that creates pieces that bring together light, sound and space to offer the audience a unique visual and sensory experience. The wide range of projects that NONOTAK can design and produce allows them to experiment in many different fields of art: Architecture, music, visual arts, digital arts, scenography, theatre, cinema, dance, design and fashion. Nonotak’s aesthetic is inspired by minimalist architecture and optical art.
