raster – artistic platform since 1996

The music label raster is an artistic platform and an international network for progressive electronic music at the border between pop, art and science. Founded in 1996 by Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider as rastermusic, it merged in 1999 with Carsten Nicolais noton Sublabel to form raster-noton. Since May 2017 raster works independently again.

The label’s catalogue to date comprises around 180 publications that present very different artists such as visual artists, club musicians, noise pioneers, academically trained composers and classical instrumentalists.

Already the first publication “Kyborg” from 1996 initiates a series. The so-called “Raster” series showed computer-generated graphics on the cover that referred to the label’s logo. More and more series concepts followed, culminating in the renowned “20′ to 2000” series, which was awarded a Golden Nica in 2000.

In addition to publishing music, raster has also realized numerous book projects, installations and live presentations. In 2016 the “Source Book 1” was published, a modular 400-page book that archives and reflects the history of the label.

Over the past 20 years, the label has also repeatedly collaborated with institutions, fashion designers, museums and festivals around the world. Once a year the label also hosts the “Electric Campfire”, a showcase that presents current artists and publications.

Today the label is run by Olaf Bender alias Byetone with headquarters in Chemnitz and Berlin.
