THE ART OF STAYING MANY: Our Beautiful Saxony

“The waves become calmer and fewer. Listen carefully, you can feel the difference. We are approaching our destination. The air is clear and unradiated. We call the birds and the sun NATURE and the mobile data CULTURE and then we love one and despise the other. The sun does its thing as it always has and does not allow itself to be taken over by digital platform capitalism. The birds don’t expect an answer from me after tweeting and that’s precisely why I answer the cuckoo with joy every time. We are there in a moment, in the beautiful and the good, in the old and the pure, in the genuine and the unadulterated, the natural, the normal.”
„Our beautiful Saxony” are three bike tours as part of „THE ART OF STAYING MANY” by the Fonds Darstellende Künste, which will take you from Dresden’s Altmarkt to Saxony’s funfairs. The public can either ride along live on their own bikes or follow the tours on screens on the Altmarkt while enjoying pizza from Calzone Revoluzione and a cool drink, or watch and comment from the comfort of their own homes via the livestreaming video portal twitch. Switch off the sound from the selfie camera (‘sachsensachsen’) and mix the sound from the other two channels (performer from behind ‘fachbetriebritagrechen’ and guitar ‘unserwunderschönes’) as desired.

1. Tour
From the Altmarkt, the route goes via Gorbitz up to Pennrich. From there, pass Steinhübel in the direction of Wilsdruff and continue to Klipphausen. After a short descent through the forest, the route takes you into the radio hole at Neudeckmühle. Then steeply uphill to Kleinschönberg. Then a relaxed descent to Constappel. Finally the Elbe cycle path: from here it’s a leisurely ride along the Elbe back to the Altmarkt.
- 42 kilometers
- 300 vertical meters*
- Circa 2 h 30 min
- Demanding tour over asphalt, gravel and dirt lanes
*It is possible that the bike may be pushed uphill. The group then stays together. Also on the other tours.
2. Tour
The second tour leads eastwards along the Elbe to Heidenau. There you leave the tarmac roads behind. The route to the Funkloch leads along trails. A racing bike cannot get there easily. Tour participants have to be persistent.
- 38 kilometres
- 140 metres
- Circa 3 h
- Demanding tour, but at a leisurely pace
3. Tour
The third tour leads from the Altmarkt to Löbtau. From there, the route continues to Zauckerode and steeply uphill to Niederhermsdorf. Via Oberhermsdorf, the route then goes downhill to Tharandt (on the S192). And from there along the Wilde Weißeritz to Cossmannsdorf. In the radio hole in Rabenauer Grund, probably only those who are there live – i.e. on a bike – will hear anything. The spectators on the Altmarkt will have to hope that the mobile radio will at least get through the trees a little.
- 40 kilometers
- 360 vertical meters
- Circa 3 h
- Demanding tour
