Playing on Nerves. A Punk Dream
Nicoleta Esinencu & teatru-spălătorie/HAU
With her texts and productions, Nicoleta Esinencu currently belongs to the strong voices working within Europe. With her theater collective, she develops uncomfortable topics for the stage in a powerful, musical and sharply humorous way. Her latest work also continues the critical examination of history and the present from an Eastern European perspective.
In the Republic of Moldova, the triumph of the capitalist system and technological progress have changed everything in recent decades. A future which is thought of as a communal project with good living conditions for all has become a distant dream. Today we live in a world in which there is less and less togetherness but for that increasingly exploited, alienated and stressed egos. The system wants us to work tirelessly and never sleep. The second part of the trilogy “Symphony of Progress” reclaims the right to tell the story of the East from the East and the right to re-imagine an alternative to capitalism. With interviews and field reports, Nicoleta Esinencu and the collective teatru-spălătorie are creating a new archive that makes voices from Eastern Europe audible. This is how “Playing on Nerves. A Punk Dream” becomes a nightmare of capitalism.
