Open Studio: Melih Kiraç
The dancer and performer Melih Kiraç, artist-in-residence, provides insights into his interdisciplinary work, in which he deals with the inscription of cultural history into the body. The project “Be Mobile-Create Together” is a multinational residency programme that promotes the exchange of artists* between Europe and Turkey.
Melih Kıraç initially practiced folk dances before studying Contemporary Dance at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. After completing his BA, he joined the Modern Dance Theatre Istanbul (MDT) which is a part of the State Opera and Ballet of Istanbul. Since 2011, he has been a member of the collective Çıplak Ayaklar Kumpanyası, an independent dance collective creating independent choreographies, organising performances and workshops for the local dance community. Since 2013, he has been a researcher and lecturer in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. The choreographers he worked with include Meg Stuart, Marc Vanrunxt, Tijen Lawton, Tuğçe Tuna, TALDANS, MDT Istanbul and visual artists such as İnci Eviner in We, Elsewhere, for the Pavilion of Turkey at the 58th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia. His own dance pieces and WELCOME have been presented in Istanbul and Brussels. New Skin for the Old Ceremony for Kamola Rashidova is his latest work.
