Tim Tam Tom

Composer-Class Dresden

2024/25 Musik Gespräch

New music by children and young people in the world premiere concert of the Dresden composers’ class

The family concert ‘Tim Tam Tom’ focuses on the world of percussion instruments in combination with the diverse tonal possibilities of accordion and clarinet. For the first time, the Dresden Composers’ Class is collaborating with percussionist Anke Storch and the Stock-Wettin duo (Susanne Stock/accordion & Georg Wettin/clarinet). For this exciting and unusual line-up, which also includes the rarely heard double bass clarinet, the eight to 20-year-olds composed under the guidance of Silke Fraikin, Johannes Korndörfer, Annette Schlünz and Bernd Schumann and are working on their new pieces together with the musicians.

There will be 16 premieres, including ‘Partytour’ by Manuel Timme (aged 9), ‘Wie der Waldteufel den Baum hochklettert’ by Linda Korndörfer (aged 9) and ‘Tim Tam Tom’ by Cedric Haß (aged 12). Levin Schleif (10 years old) dedicated himself to the theme of ‘wind and weather’, and Elias Krauße (17 years old) composed a piece about his tomcat Sergeant. The palette of skin, wood and metal sounds ranges from bongos, darabuka, snare drum, tom-toms and timpani to temple blocks and maracas, cymbals, tam-tam, crotales, tubular bells and singing bowls. But rustling bags and crackling paper as well as self-made sound generators are also used.

The premiere concert will take place as a family concert with a host. The musicians will guide you through the programme and introduce the composers and their ideas for the pieces in short interviews.

Anke Storch, born in 1983, studied at the Coswig Music School, the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. She has played as a freelance orchestral percussionist in various orchestras and ensembles such as Semper Zwei Dresden, Tempus Konnex Leipzig, Philharmonie Magdeburg, Anhaltisches Theater Dessau etc.  Workshops with renowned artists such as Kaija Saariaho, N. J. Zivkovic and others expanded her artistic repertoire. Through her studies, she immersed herself in contemporary music and specialized in newly written works by young composers. She has been involved in the Impuls Festival Saxony-Anhalt as a multi-percussionist since its beginnings. Since 2021, she has been working on compositions by young composers for the Impuls Festival under the direction of Annette Schlünz as part of the Künstlerstadt Kalbe summer campus.

Susanne Stock, born in Dessau in 1980, studied at the “Schloss Belvedere” music high school in Weimar with Prof. Claudia Buder, at the “Franz Liszt” University of Music in Weimar with Prof. Ivan Koval and at the HfK Bremen with Prof. Margit Kern. She has attended master classes with Stefan Hussong, Hugo Noth, Mikko Luoma, Mie Miki and others. As an accordionist, she is active as a soloist and chamber musician. She is a member of the Dresden-based “Ensemble Courage”, “Contemporary Insights” Leipzig and the “Géllert Szabó Ideal Orchestra” Leipzig. In intensive collaboration with composers such as H. Oehring, A. Schlünz, B. Schweitzer, S. Odeh-Tamimi and M. Quell, she has created solo and chamber music works which she has premiered. Susanne Stock taught in various state and private music schools from 2005-2021. From 2011 to 2020 she was a lecturer at the University of Potsdam. She is currently concentrating entirely on her artistic work. In recent years, she has become increasingly interested in other genres, especially free improvised music and performances. She continues to pursue these approaches, for example in the concert series DREI AUF EINS, which she launched with the duo Stock – Wettin in 2021.

Georg Wettin, born in Dresden in 1980, graduated from the Dresden Special School of Music. In 2000, he began studying the clarinet at the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music Dresden, where he completed his master class with distinction in 2009. During this time, he won several prizes and various scholarships and gained orchestral experience as a trainee with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra and later as a substitute with the Staatskapelle Weimar, Staatskapelle Dresden and Magdeburg Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. Since completing his studies, he has worked as a freelance musician, primarily in the field of contemporary music and chamber music, performing at major festivals in Germany and Europe and frequently appearing on German radio stations. As a member of ensemble courage, Georg Wettin has recorded several CDs in recent years and premiered works for solo clarinet composed especially for him.  For some time now, Georg Wettin has also been involved in the development and performance of contemporary music theater projects on stage. In 2022, for example, in the highly acclaimed premiere of the AI opera “chasing waterfalls” by Angus Lee at the Semperoper Dresden. Crossover projects are very close to his heart. For example, he initiated the series DREI AUF EINS with the duo Stock – Wettin, where guests from other artistic disciplines are regularly invited to work together on a theme.
