PORTRAITS – HELLERAU Photography Award 2024
Vernissage of the Residence Award Exhibition at HELLERAU
Since the PORTRAITS competition was founded in 2015, a rotating jury has selected portrait photographs by over 400 artists from more than 50 countries for numerous solo and group exhibitions in Dresden and has awarded prize money totaling EUR 90,000.
The motto of PORTRAITS 2024 is “Singularity”. At the opening of the annual exhibition on August 29, 2024 at the Technische Sammlungen, the four winners will be announced, including the Residency Award. This award provides the winner with the opportunity to undertake a residency at HELLERAU followed by a solo exhibition. One day later, on August 30, the Residency Award exhibition will open at HELLERAU. Here, Sitara Thalia Ambrosio, the 2023 Residency Award winner, will be showing new works side by side to this year’s Residency Award winner.
In her photographic essay “Fragile as Glass”, Sitara Thalia Ambrosio documents the fates of queer people in Ukraine. As part of her residency at HELLERAU, Ambrosio developed the essay into a photo book, which was published by Verlag Kettler in April 2024. Her second photographic work deals with the topic of “climate crisis and war”.

Sitara Thalia Ambrosio (*2002 in Fürth) is an internationally active photojournalist. She focuses primarily on gender issues, migration and human rights violations and often addresses underrepresented topics in conflicts. Her work has been exhibited and awarded several times. Among others, she and a team received the Grimme Online Award in 2022 for the multimedia report “Kandvala”. In 2023, she was awarded the PORTRAITS Hellerau Photography Award Residency Prize for “Fragile as Glass”. Ambrosio is a member of the laif agency.
