Note from summer 2001: “Rework the concept of the Fifth Symphony!” Question by Ekkehard Klemm in February 2017: “What does your Fifth Symphony actually do? Much time and thought went into the process of creating this music: writing a symphony, in the 21st century? Another symphony, after such a long time? In fact, the story already begins in the 1970s, when the mid-thirties Wilfried Krätzschmar was about to write his first. Even then, questions arose: How to deal with tradition? Do symphonies still need to be written at all? What is that anyway, a symphony? At first only one thing was clear: to deal with it becomes like entering an arena: challenge and risk!
