Die Blechtrommel
Devid Striesow & Stefan Weinzierl
The idea of the Hamburg percussionist Stefan Weinzierl is obvious and yet unique: Selected scenes from the novel of the century “The Tin Drum” by Günter Grass, read by actor Devid Striesow, are atmospherically accompanied by Weinzierl and the various percussion instruments are repeatedly given their soloistic place.
Language and music tell the life of Oskar Matzerath, who stops growing at the age of three and experiences the adult world from what appears to be the perspective of a child. A life story – from his birth in Gdansk in 1924 to the end of the Second World War. And just as Oskar raises his voice to play the drums, Striesow and Weinzierl combine the powerful expressiveness of Günter Grass’ novel with the multifaceted timbres of vibraphone, marimba, percussion and live electronics – a unique, intense text-music experience whose message has once again become immensely relevant in today’s world.
