Residencies: Open Calls

Open Call: "Artist-in-Garden-Residence: Liquid Narratives"

After two editions of the “Artist-in-Garden” residencies, HELLERAU is once again looking for artistic positions from the Performing Arts for June, August or September 2024 that deal with the “Kulturgarten” behind the Festspielhaus – as a starting point for artistic research.

The “Artist-in-Garden” residencies are aimed at artists who want to research sustainability and cross-species perspectives in their work and question the power relations of categories such as nature, culture, human and technology.

After “Artist-in-Garden: Environment’ (2019) and ‘Artist-in-Garden: Kinships” (2023), the third edition now follows: “Artist-in-Garden: Liquid Narratives”. This year, we are interested in the hidden fluids of the cultural garden, its juices and flowing narratives. Project ideas for the residency can focus on global water scarcity, wet identities, fluid narratives or location-specific topics – in dialog with scientists, in participatory formats or in a concrete examination of materials. The project proposal under this title is open – applicants can freely formulate their idea in a concept text. During the residency, a research question can be developed, or an existing topic can be explored in greater depth.

HELLERAU’s “Kulturgarten” offers an ideal opportunity as a place of inspiration. The “Kulturgarten” is located directly next to the Festspielhaus and invites visitors to engage with ecological sustainability, workshops, performances, and concerts. The results of the residency can be presented both publicly to an audience or internally in the form of a workshop or Sharing in HELLERAU. Artists can be linked with partners from science and Dresden’s urban society according to their interests.

2-3 project applications will be selected from the submissions.
