Bullshit
She She Pop
“”Bullshit” develops as a clever, very contemporary experimental arrangement, (…) asks the right questions, exposes its own helplessness and finds comedic and poetic images to go with.” – Hamburger Abendblatt, 10.Februar 2025
“They (…) were treated to a performance in which no one is too embarrassed to put the literally naked facts, even those of a no longer young female body, at the service of doubt, of questioning what one knows or thinks one knows and what is now crumbling and crumbling. (…) It’s been a long time since we’ve seen anything as intense as “Bullshit” from the icons of the German-language performance scene.” – FAZ, Eva-Maria Magel, 24 November 2024
That’s bullshit: a slang term for something that is false, discredited, nonsense. Or something that is invented, fake, misleading, a deception.
On an empty stage, the performers find themselves in the endless loop of a sales show. There is nothing here – and yet everything is on offer. The spiral around She She Pop as sellers of reality goes on and on, their search for something to which they can still attach a value, only to sell it off. Can they still grasp reality with their senses, describe it with words? Can it still be saved? Can anything withstand the sell-out? She She Pop have lost their bearings. The central perspective – from which they have learnt to focus on any goal – has dissolved.
In ‘Bullshit’, She She Pop bravely confront the loss of a common reality. The performers acknowledge that they know nothing and that even the poetic reality of the theatre space has been compromised. So they try to leave the bubble of their perception to assume other proportions, to see other colours, to communicate with echolocation like the bat, and to find themselves in absolute darkness. They imagine other ways of seeing, they commit themselves to uncertainty and dedicate themselves to unlearning. Will they still succeed in shaping an experience out of chaos, finding meaning in randomness, creating meaning in the confusion of possibilities – or, as a last resort, declaring bankruptcy a comedy?
