Udo Zimmermann on his 80th birthday
Talk & concert
“Ich bin ein Theatermensch. Udo Zimmermann: Dokumente und Erinnerungen” (I am a person of theater. Udo Zimmermann: Documentation and Memories) – this is the title of a comprehensive documentation on the life and work of the composer, conductor and artistic director, who would have celebrated his 80th birthday on October 6, 2023, which will be published by Musikverlag Breitkopf & Härtel in March 2024. The publication, edited by dramaturge Saskia Zimmermann together with Dresden musicologist Prof. Matthias Herrmann, combines documents, letters, autographs and photos from the estate with memories. Colleagues and associates report on their encounters and collaboration with Udo Zimmermann from a variety of perspectives.
The book launch on March 24 at the Leipzig Book Fair will be followed by a presentation of the book in Udo Zimmermann’s home city of Dresden on Saturday, April 13, 2024. Among other things, he provided important input here from 1987 with the international festival Dresdner Tage der zeitgenössischen Musik (Dresden Days of Contemporary Music) and played a key role in the revival of the Festspielhaus Hellerau as an art venue in 2004 with the founding of the European Center for the Arts. The book launch is planned as a reading and panel discussion with personalities who are represented in the book with their own contributions. The discussion about Udo Zimmermann will be followed by a concert of his chamber music, short excerpts from his operas and song compositions.
