Artist Talk by Choy Ka Fai at Japanisches Palais
The Singaporean artist Choy Ka Fai is currently Artist in Residence at HYBRID and the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. Before presenting the project “Tragic Spirits” with his ensemble in the Great Hall at the Festspielhaus in Hellerau on 21 October, he will give a research presentation on the notions of telepresence, in relation to art-making, social media and the metaverse during the MUPP Art Night at the Japanisches Palais in Dresden on 20 October. The artist talk will share about the creation process “Post-Colonial Spirits” as a telepresence performance, experimenting with Indonesia Folk Dance of Dolalak. Dolalak is trance dance ritual from the 1930s draws upon a multi-dimensional history of traditional Javanese dance movement, imitations of partying Colonial Dutch solider and melodic Islamic poems. Dolalak’s dense heritage opens up a liminal space in which dance transcends beyond the resistance of coloniality, power and fantasy.
