BABEL

Jordi Galí

2023/24 Dance Together Performance

In BABEL, a 12-metre-high tower made of wood, ropes and winches, strong and fragile at the same time, is erected and held up by 25 people under the eyes of the audience. From its construction to its dismantling, the tower manifests the solidarity of a group of people. As part of a two-day workshop, the participants learn the skills required to build the tower, learn how to make the necessary modules and try out how to navigate them together. In this way, the Babel tower is created from a simple and equally precise choreography – an impressive performance and a brief utopia of togetherness. BABEL concludes with the performance and construction of the Tower of Hellerau on the forecourt of the Festspielhaus during the Gatenfest as part of the Dance Together festival.

Born at Barcelona, Jordi Galí studied contemporary dance and worked with Wim Vandekeybus, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Maguy Marin among others. Besides, Jordi Galí started to develop his own work and created Cie Arrangement Provisoire in 2007. Since 2012, he shares the artistic direction of the company with choreographer Vania Vaneau. His work centres on exploring the relations between the body and the materials, between the gesture and the object, and is especially designed for the public space. As monumental and ephemeral constructions, his performances open a singular temporality in urban or natural landscapes. They aim to offer to the inhabitants, public and users the possibility to perceive differently the context of everyday life.
