Pierre-Luc Lecours 2020/21 & 2021/22

Genre: Music/media arts

Partnerprogram: Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. The first part of the residency will take place remotely in Canada in 2021. The second part on site in HELLERAU.

Brief description of the project: Chroma is an audio-visual concert of 50 minutes for three performers and video. The “Chroma” concert pieces are based on a cycle of four electroacoustic pieces “Éclats” where acoustic instruments, sound synthesis, soundscapes recordings, and everyday objects are musically interacting. These pieces have been published on disc with the Empreintes DIGITALes label in 2021. The musical content of each piece is freely inspired by the colour associated with it (black, purple, red, and white) and have been nourished by the creative exchanges that took place with the musicians during the recording sessions. Each of the pieces features an instrument: Chroma | Noir the cello (Émilie Girard-Charest), Chroma | Blanc the flute (Julie Delisle), Chroma | Violet percussions (Huizi Wang), and Chroma | Red the piano (Huizi Wang). In concert, these instruments will be completed by sound-amplified objects and synthesizer instruments, which will also be played by the musicians. Thus, the three musicians will participate in the interpretation of each of the pieces. The “Chroma” concert will feature video projections emphasizing certain musical aspects or becoming a complementary voice. Triggered by the musicians, the video projections will be audio-reactive and synchronized with the musical content. Using mapping techniques, three scenic spaces will be created: the projection will be done directly on the performers, on their instruments as well as on a screen device specially designed for the project. Becoming a metaphor for the energy content and movement of music, the video will be linked to the colours of each piece and will be aesthetically inspired by the pictorial abstraction work of abstract-expressionist painters (Jean-Paul Riopelle, Jackson Pollock, and Paul-Émile Borduas, to name just a few).

What inspires you? Nature, chaotic urban or natural phenomenon, industrial and nature soundscape. People that I meet.

Your first three thoughts about HELLERAU?

  • Dedication to arts, to people.
  • Resilient even in the pandemic context.
  • Creative by successfully proposing alternative ways to interact with artworks.

How would you describe your way of working? A mixture of intellectual and intuitive ways to work. I generally first approach a project in an intellectual/conceptual way. At this time, I will try to interlink all the different layers of the project. This is a phase where I just think and where there is no creation involved. Once I feel that I have set the boundaries and parameters of my creative project, I start creating in a very intuitive way. Following unpredictable patterns of creation while trying to stay within the boundaries I set for the project.
