2024/25 Tanz

The first “ Tanz in den Mai” (Dance into May) in Hellerau in 2024 was a real “street sweeper”: more than 500 people took a stroll through the garden city to experience dance under trees, in squares, streets and fire stations. Presented by Dresden dance clubs and enthusiasts, there were sneak peaks into K-pop, salsa, urban dance, pole dance, tango and roller skate dance. Together with the go plastic company, which curated the “Tanz in den Mai” in 2024, we are looking forward to the next edition in 2025! Around the Festspielhaus, at the 84th Hellerau Primary School, in the park on Ruscheweg, on the market square and on the orchard meadow, there will be insights into salsa, urban dance, contemporary dance, breakdance and pole dance – presented by Dresden dance clubs and enthusiasts. One thing is certain: there will once again be a dance festival for everyone in Gartenstadt Hellerau!

The ‘Dance into May’ begins at 16:00 in front of the Festspielhaus. After a welcome address, the audience will be divided into groups and, accompanied by dancers, will set out on a walk through the garden city. From 18:00, the dance festival will come to an end in the cultural garden behind the Festspielhaus, where everyone can dance together.

Insights into the Breaking Culture

The House of Urban Culture (HOUC) supports the complex hip-hop culture, which includes the areas of breaking, graffiti, street art, rap, beatboxing, producing and DJing, as well as related scenes. As a central point of contact and information for the scene as well as for interested parties and sponsors, the HOUC creates synergies between the various social groups, facilitates tried and tested formats of hip-hop culture and is also open to new and interdisciplinary projects and offers. This contributes to a better understanding of different cultures and connects people from different social and cultural groups. The focus of the work is on cultural education in the fields of youth culture, art and culture, integration, inclusion and prevention.

Tanzensemble ArtRose

The ArtRose dance ensemble was founded in 2011 on the initiative of Jenny Coogan, professor of contemporary dance at the Palucca University of Dance Dresden. Since then, people of a more mature age (60+) have been working together under her direction to experience improvised contemporary dance in both training sessions and collectively created and performed productions. For the ensemble’s new production, which will premiere on 18 June as part of the ‘Watch Out! Festival for Young and Old’ in HELLERAU, ArtRose is venturing a special encounter: senior citizens and young people come together to explore the topic of transgenerationality through dance. Where do generations really meet in everyday life? What language do they speak – words, gestures, movement? How can we shape change together?

Emotions in Motion

Pole dancing has its roots in the strip clubs of this world – an origin that has significantly shaped and developed this art form and should be celebrated. But in addition to the sensually seductive side, this dance form today consists of a variety of other styles and forms of expression. It offers space for every emotion – be it anger or joy, vulnerability or strength, longing or happiness. Pole dancing combines acrobatics with dance, strength with expression, elegance with passion. In the performance, solo, duo and group choreographies by members of the independent Dresden-based pole dance training community MINOR e.V. merge into a flowing whole. Between the floor and the pole, a dance unfolds that shows that pole dancing seduces and moves – powerfully and full of emotion.

The Elementio dance studio is located in the lively cultural, art and music scene of Dresden, a hotspot for salsa lovers. Whether you’re just starting out in the world of salsa or want to perfect your moves, there are numerous opportunities here to live out and develop your love of dance. At events such as the Dresden City Festival or the Palaissommer, you can not only experience salsa as a show, but also take part in taster lessons and learn a few steps. At the Elementio dance studio, we focus on Salsa on2, also known as New York Style. This style is appreciated worldwide for its elegance, precision and musicality. Salsa has its roots in the Caribbean, particularly in Cuba and Puerto Rico. Originating from Son Cubano, Salsa mixed African rhythms with European dance styles and later conquered the world.
