Po víťazstve (It All Started with a Winner)
Divadlo Štúdio tanca/Judith Sánchez Ruíz
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Slovakian national uprising in 1944, Cuban choreographer Judith Sánchez Ruíz and dancers from Divadlo Štúdio tanca in Banská Bystrica, the only contemporary dance center with a permanent ensemble in Slovakia, explore the phenomenon of the uprising in the context of today’s societies. They pose questions about identity, gender roles and power dynamics and expose entrenched notions of masculinity and patriarchy. In “Po víťazstve (It all started with a winner)”, a culture focused on the winner and the glorification of male power becomes a critique of social structures and the dynamics of competition. On stage, a colorful formal language of different dances, sculptural elements, soundscapes, video and text fragments merge into a choreography of repetition – a loop of history that raises questions about understanding and dialogue.

Judith Sánchez Ruíz is a Cuban choreographer and performer. She studied at the National School of Arts in Ciudad de la Habana, Cuba. She worked in New York City from 1999 to 2011 before moving to Berlin. She has danced with renowned choreographers such as Sasha Waltz & Guest, Deborah Hay, Trisha Brown Dance Company and taught at the HZT – Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz and the Kunsthochschule Weißensee, among others. As a choreographer, she specializes in working between artistic disciplines and improvisational approaches.
Divadlo Štúdio tanca in Banská Bystrica is the only contemporary dance center with a permanent ensemble in Slovakia. In cooperation with guest choreographers, it produces its own pieces, organizes dance festivals and offers artist residencies and dance workshops.
