HELLERAU meets Tarabya: Moving Inwards – Performing Arts Without a Stage?

The online discussion “HELLERAU meets Tarabya: Moving Inwards – Performing Arts Without a Stage?“ took place on April 24th, 2020. An international collaboration between two Artist Residencies Kulturakademie Tarabya, Istanbul and HELLERAU – European Centre for the Arts, Dresden.

The Kulturakademie Tarabya in Istanbul is a residency program for artists working in all fields. It was founded in 2011 on the initiative of the German Bundestag and promotes artistic exchange between Turkey and Germany.

Every year the Kulturakademie Tarabya offers approximately 20 scholarship recipients a working and living space in Istanbul. The Kulturakademie is located on the grounds of the historic summer residence of the German ambassador in Tarabya (Istanbul). The Academy of Culture is managed by the German Embassy in Ankara (represented by Meik Laufer), the Goethe-Institut Istanbul bears the curatorial responsibility (represented by Pia Entenmann).”

HELLERAU – European Centre for the Arts is an international production and guest performance house in Dresden.

With the residency program HELLERAU opens different opportunities to conduct artistic research, as well as to deepen and expand working methods. Developing new projects and entering into exchange with other artists and agents of the cultural field is one of the aims on site. HELLERAU offers contemporary arts dance, music, theatre, performance, media art and visual arts spaces for production and presentation. Carena Schlewitt is the artistic director of the house.

HELLERAU and the Goethe-Institut are part of “Be Mobile – Create Together!”, a multinational residency program that connects artists and cultural institutions from Turkey, France, Netherlands and Germany. Gizem Aksu and Melih Kirac are part of this program and at the moment in residence in HELLERAU in Dresden.

Led by the Institut français de Turquie, the Embassy of the Netherlands in Ankara, the Goethe-Institut and the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), the project Be Mobile-Create Together! seeks to promote artistic and cultural exchanges between Europe and Turkey through the establishment of a multi-national and multi-disciplinary network of artist residencies.
