House of Research: Angela Nwagbo

April & May 2025

In cooperation with the residency and program venue Studio ALTA in Prague three artists are invited for a research residency in HELLERAU.

The mulitdisciplinary performance artist and anthropologist Angela Nwagbo uses the residency to further develop their performative project „Afropean lecture-performance“. “Afropean lecture-performance“ will be based on the anthropological research of Afroczech social identities Angela Nwagbo is working on at the University of Hradec Králové and the material she has created and topics she has come across while creating her solo performance called “Confluence”. In “Confluence” she, with the help of the Senegalese percussionist Siaka Toure, presented a personal testimony about cultural, linguistic and social identity. Using artistic means such as music and fashion that fuse African and Slavic folklore, or a unique physical language that combines Western and African dances, the work brings to light what for many is still a utopian notion of harmony between African and European cultures.

Angela Nwagbo is a multidisciplinary performance artist and anthropologist. She is an actor for theatre and screen, dancer and versatile performer of Czech-Nigerian origin. Angela Nwagbo’s artistic practice focuses on ethnic and cultural identity, particularly for people of mixed heritage like herself. Through physical theatre, dance, storytelling, fashion, and music, she explores belonging, racial dynamics, and the challenges mixed-race individuals face in affiliating with Czech society. She aims to connect her two fields—anthropological research and performing arts. Both confined to specific spaces and social bubbles, she is passionate about bridging these worlds to democratize knowledge and foster deeper understanding.

She studied acting for alternative and puppet theatre at DAMU in Prague, moving on to studying socio-cultural anthropology at Charle’s University. In 2023, she attended a 10-week intensive workshop Africa Diaspora Trainig at l’École des Sables in Senegal. As an anthropologist, she is working on the research of Afroczech social identities.
