“Popular is what is recognised by many” - this is the working definition of the Collaborative Research Centre “Transformations of the Popular” based at the University of Siegen. In three research areas and around 20 sub-projects, the research network investigates how the social status of the popular has changed in recent decades and how the popular in turn shapes social and cultural dynamics. At the center of this is the question of which new cultural, media and political constellations have emerged as a result.
On 8 May, the Collaborative Research Centre will introduce itself in an opening discussion with Niels Weber and provide insights into the central questions and research approaches of the network with the contribution “What difference does the popular make? On the social distribution of attention”.
On 9 May, individual researchers will expand on these perspectives in short keynote speeches. Selected sub-projects will be presented that focus on different manifestations of the popular, processes of popularisation and their transitions and interdependencies with populist dynamics.
