Roses are Red, Gender is Performative – Eszter Kállay & Bence György Pálinkas

What is considered ‘natural’ or ‘unnatural’ when we care for someone? This is the core question of the workshop organized by Eszter Kállay and Bence György Pálinkás at HELLERAU.

The workshops take place in the cultural garden and the greenhouse, among plants that seem to be natural, but due to their cultural environment behave quite differently than in their natural habitat.

During ten days we invite ten participants to discover the garden and the common activities we can do there – searching for interesting plant metaphors and working with our hands, building, picking and playing. At the same time, we invite participants:inside to a conversation about the relationship between cultivating a garden and raising children, with a focus on sex or gender.

How do we shape the ideas of those we care for and how do they shape us? Why is it so difficult to individually overcome external expectations of gendered roles, and how does this relate to the metaphors we use when we talk about a garden?

The end result of our exchange will be a co-created video piece that we would like to share with contributors to get their feedback.
