Open Call: tanzschreiber authors

About tanzschreiber

At tanzschreiber texts are published that illuminate the aesthetic and conceptual diversity of dance in Berlin and Potsdam and make them accessible to a professional and lay audience alike: Around 700 dance reviews in nine years of tanzschreiber. With funding from the ERDF project "Empowering Dance", the tanzschreiber module will continue from 2023 to 2026.

In 2016, as part of the EFRE project “Attention Dance,” Tanzbüro Berlin introduced a regular review section with tanzschreiber, which supplements the content of the magazine tanzraumberlin with current reviews of Berlin dance performances on the online portal:

Commitments

With this call we are looking for two dance journalists on a freelance basis for tanzschreiber for the period from March 11 to 15, 2026 - one German-speaking journalist from Dresden and one English-speaking journalist with an international perspective from Berlin - who will share their impressions in writing during Tanzplattform Deutschland 2026.

By mutual agreement with Tanzbüro Berlin and the organizers of Tanzplattform 2026 (HELLERAU - European Centre for the Arts), the authors will accompany Tanzplattform 2026 beyond the performances and publish their impressions on the Tanzplattform and tanzschreiber websites. The activity includes:

  • Visit of Tanzplattform Deutschland 2026 from March 11 to 15, 2026 in (in addition to performances, panels, lectures, network meetings, parties, etc.)
  • Writing of five publication-ready contributions to accompany each day
  • Submission of the contributions incl. photo promptly (next day) tanzschreiber editorial team for first publication (*exact procedure to be clarified)
  • Supplement the articles with own photo material

Requirements

  • Experience in journalistic and editorial work
  • Very good knowledge of dance as an art form and relevant theories/discourses
  • Good knowledge of the nationwide dance infrastructure and relevant cultural policy processes

Formalities

Please submit your application for freelance work as a tanzschreiber author for Tanzplattform Deutschland 2026 with the following documents and information:

  • Letter of motivation with reference to the above requirements
  • Curriculum vitae including references or an exemplary selection (number 3-5) of publications on dance or in the field of art & culture.

The selection will be made by the staff of Tanzbüro Berlin and the organizers of Tanzplattform Deutschland 2026 (HELLERAU – Europäisches Zentrum der Künste).

A fee of €1,250 net will be paid by Tanzbüro Berlin. The fee covers all costs incurred for the work.

Travel and accommodation costs for the English-speaking author from Berlin will be covered by the organizers of Tanzplattform 2026 ((HELLERAU – Europäisches Zentrum der Künste).

Accreditation will be provided by the organizers of Tanzplattform Deutschland 2026 (HELLERAU – Europäisches Zentrum der Künste). They will also provide free press tickets for attending the events.

Tanzbüro Berlin and HELLERAU – Europäisches Zentrum der Künste attach great importance to a working environment that is critical of discrimination.
