Karol Filo (Slovakia/Czech Republic)

During the residency, Karol Filo delves into his own fantasies about the 1990s and confronts them with the visual, ideological, and imaginative worlds of the anti-fascist movement in the Czech Republic and Slovakia during that decade. At a time when part of society believed that history had ended and that the political nature of everyday life had dissolved into the neoliberal dream of a free market and individual competition, members of the anti-facist movement closely followed the activities of far-right and neo Nazi skinheads and often decided for counter violence. The decision to fight back - and the imaginaries surrounding it — interest Karol Filo as a space of tension between the European fantasy of nonviolence and the lived reality of physical confrontation.
