Since its foundation in 1987, the "Dresdner Tage der zeitgenössischen Musik" (DTzM) has established itself as an internationally significant platform for current developments in contemporary music, exciting experiments and surprising interdisciplinary constellations. In addition to the most internationally renowned composers and ensembles of new music, the festival presents exciting up-and-coming artists and provides insights into the vibrant independent music scene in Dresden and Saxony. In cooperation with established institutions such as the Staatskapelle Dresden, Elblandphilharmonie Sachsen, Semperoper and Staatsschauspiel Dresden, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen or the Dresden Colleges of Music and Fine Arts, numerous existing projects and series of these institutions are also made visible in an international festival context. Composition commissions are awarded and co-productions planned with many of the most important festivals of contemporary music such as Donaueschinger Musiktage, MAERZ Musik, Darmstädter Ferienkurse, MUSICA Strasbourg, MANIFESTE / IRCAM Paris, ULTIMA Oslo or WIEN MODERN.
The "Dresdner Tage der zeitgenössischen Musik" was founded in 1987 by Udo Zimmermann who also managed the newly opened HELLERAU - European Centre for the Arts until 2008. Under the directorship of Dieter Jaenicke (2009-18), they were successfully continued under the title "Tonlagen - Dresdner Festival der zeitgenössischen Musik", since 2012 as a biennial edition. Since 2019, the festival has been directed by Moritz Lobeck, and since 2023 it has returned to its original title "Dresdner Tage der zeitgenössischen Musik". A central new series of the current festival editions is "Immersive Sounds", which focuses on one of the most exciting and dynamic fields in the field of art, music and technology.
