Rhythm and Architecture in Hellerau

Since its foundation in 1911, the Festspielhaus Hellerau has looked back on an extraordinary history. Originally built specifically for the Swiss educator Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, Hellerau developed into an international center for his method. More than 400 pupils from 15 nations came together here. Famous figures such as Igor Stravinsky, Franz Kafka and Rainer Maria Rilke took notice of this special place; at the same time, Hellerau shaped the development of modern expressive dance, notably through the work of Mary Wigman and Gret Palucca.

The tour combines a guided tour of the Festspielhaus and its surroundings with insights into life and architecture in the historic Hellerau. A special feature is a 45-minute workshop with rhythm specialist Prof. Christine Straumer: Participants will not only learn about the basic principles of the Dalcroze method, but will also experience rhythm, movement and music first-hand and independently.

The workshop is generally open to anyone interested, with or without dance experience. Unfortunately, however, we are currently unable to guarantee full accessibility for the entire program.
