Tjijandjeua 'Gift' Uzera
May & June 2025
Namibian performer and interdisciplinary artist Tjijandjeua 'Gift' Uzera is researching his project "Rhythm Reborn" during his residency at HELLERAU. "Rhythm Reborn" is a research-based performance that explores the evolution of traditional Herero dance, in particular the transition of Oviritje from a ritual practice to a contemporary form of entertainment. The project explores how colonial education and the dominance of Western dance have marginalised indigenous movements in Namibia and how contemporary performance can serve as a space for the reclamation and further development of traditional dances.
During the residency, Tjijandjeua 'Gift' Uzera will analyse the kinetic principles of Ondjongo, Omutjina and Oviritje and map their movement vocabulary alongside Afro-contemporary and Western dance techniques. The aim is to create a new choreographic language that reflects the coexistence of historical and modern Namibian identity in dance.
