What styles and influences can be found in contemporary dance? Following on from the 2022/23 season's Tanzformen edition, which focused on the German dance scene, this season HELLERAU is showing works by artists and dance companies who produce between their African countries of origin and Europe and are among the most important dance protagonists on the contemporary international scene. The respective local and cultural contexts of the artistic works have an influence on their aesthetics and at the same time address global themes. The choreographers combine tradition with modernity and search for new ways of communication. They dedicate themselves to marginalised groups, form structures of solidarity and question their roles and responsibilities as artists.

For the programme selection, HELLERAU cooperated with the biennial Swiss festival Culturescapes, which has been promoting cross-border cultural dialogue, mutual learning between different cultures as well as collaboration and networking for many years. In 2023, Culturescapes' artistic programme focused on the Sahara region - the shifting borders of the desert and the post-colonial borders of North African countries and their possible futures in light of the climate crisis.
