The Festspielhaus HELLERAU, built in 1911 as an educational institution for rhythmics based on the visions of the pioneer of modern architecture Heinrich Tessenow and the music teacher Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, is now the headquarters of HELLERAU - European Centre for the Arts. As the stage of the state capital of Dresden, HELLERAU is one of the most important interdisciplinary centres of contemporary art and is still regarded as a source of inspiration for architecture, expressive dance, modern forms of design and as the cradle of rhythmic education.

Against forgetting in the north of Dresden

Under the rule of the National Socialists, people were persecuted, arrested, tortured and murdered for ideological and racist reasons. Many victims were interned in concentration camps and used for forced labor to compensate for the war-related labor shortage. “MNEMO – Memorial Site Dresden North” gives visibility to the sites of victims and perpetrators of forced labor and tyranny during the National Socialist era in the north of Dresden.

Hellerau Memorial

The history of the festival theater grounds – and the surrounding garden city of Hellerau – is closely linked to the great catastrophes of the 20th century. The former cultural center underwent several transformations into a place of violent history: as the location of the Nazi police force and, after the end of the war, the Soviet armed forces.

In 1992, the site was transferred to the Free State of Saxony and in 2006 to the state capital Dresden. From the outset, local initiatives such as the Förderverein für die Europäische Werkstatt für Kunst und Kultur Hellerau e.V. (Friends of the European Workshop for Art and Culture Hellerau) sought to repurpose the area for cultural use. The historic buildings were revitalized in several stages, and since the 2009 season, permanent operation has been made possible by HELLERAU – European Centre for the Arts. On the initiative of the city council, the state capital of Dresden, and HELLERAU – European Centre for the Arts, historian Robert Badura from the Institute for Saxon History and Folklore (ISGV) conducted intensive research into the history of the festival theater during National Socialism.

As part of “MNEMO – Memorial Site Dresden North”, the east wing on the festival theater grounds is marked as a site of 20th-century violent history.
