As part of “Taiwan Moves”, HELLERAU is opening its cultural garden for a very special summer event:

In cooperation with the Dresden Mandarin School e.V. and the Taiwanese Women's Association Dresden, a real, authentic Taiwanese market will be created for one afternoon at Hellerau. The night markets are considered one of Taiwan's main tourist attractions and attract thousands of visitors in every major city - both locals and tourists. The special flair of these night markets is the mixture of countless street food specialities and traditional games (which not only children enjoy). In Taiwan, these night markets are an integral part of the entertainment programme for young and old, and usually only open in the early evening when Taiwan's tropical heat becomes bearable.

The Taiwanese community in Dresden is now offering the unique opportunity to experience this intoxicating tradition for yourself at HELLERAU - without a long flight and in the most beautiful afternoon sunshine. Traditional dishes such as rice balls, dumplings, grilled sausages and tea are on offer, as well as games such as ring toss, bean races and throwing bags. These games are complemented by small courses to try out, for example calligraphy, seal carving, origami or modelling with clay.

Biography

Dresden Mandarin School e.V.

The Dresden Mandarin School emerged from an initiative of Taiwanese parents living in Dresden and was registered as an association at the beginning of 2026. Classes are currently held in Weinböhla. The aim is to build a bridge between language and culture and thus convey a deeper understanding of Taiwan. The school is open to students of different mother tongues, thus expanding the opportunities to promote education and cooperation with local communities and cultural institutions in Dresden and Saxony.

Taiwanese Women's Association Dresden

The Taiwanese Women's Association Dresden sees itself as a meeting place for Taiwanese living in Dresden for many years and a Taiwanese cultural association. The aim is to convey a sense of solidarity to Taiwanese living in Dresden and to offer mutual support. At the same time, the women's association also initiates cultural events for the entire city public, ensures an intensive cultural exchange between Saxony and Taiwan, and conveys a complex picture of Taiwanese culture and realities of life.
