Innocence

Can the past be denied, memory erased? After a mass shooting at a school, fellow students, parents and teachers are left stunned and traumatised. Based on this trauma, Kaija Saariaho’s opera ‘Innocence’ develops a multi-layered scenario of time and narrative levels. Saariaho develops her very own language: her music thrives on sophisticated timbres and dreamlike moods, is delicate, filigree and at the same time very expressive, ‘more cinematic, so to speak’, as Saariaho herself described it.
