2024/25 Workshop HELLERAUmoves

As part of the ‘Rhythm Reborn’ residency at HELLERAU, this workshop invites you into a dynamic space where traditional Herero dance and contemporary movement meet. Rooted in embodied research, the session explores how movement can serve as a living archive, holding stories of cultural memory, resistance, and transformation.

You’ll engage in guided improvisation and structured exercises drawn from Herero dance traditions such as Ondjongo, Omutjina, and Oviritje, while incorporating elements of Afro-contemporary and release techniques. Together, you’ll examine how movement, particularly Oviritje’s evolving rhythm, can express both heritage and modern identity, beyond ceremonial roles. No prior dance experience is required, just a willingness to move, reflect, and participate in a process that connects the personal and the political through the body.

You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of how traditional practices can transform within contemporary landscapes. Together, you’ll explore how dance holds cultural memory and how it can grow and change over time.

Please wear comfortable clothing, bring a bottle of water, and come with an open mind.
