This year marks the tenth anniversary of the German ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which emphasizes and guarantees the cultural participation of people with disabilities. However, the understanding of accessibility in theatre often ends with the provision of technical aids. However, this view does not correspond by far to the diversity of artists with disabilities and thus leaves a large artistic potential unused and at the same time excludes a broad audience.

For this reason, the FREIE SZENE service centre is hosting DIVERS! for the second time. Co-creative. Zukunftslabor Inklusion + Freie Darstellende Künste in Saxony in cooperation with HELLERAU – Europäisches Zentrum der Künste and the Servicestelle Inklusion in the cultural sector. In workshops, labs and discussions this day will focus on artistic approaches, aesthetics and practices, on the challenges for the self-confident visualization of more physical diversity and an emphasis on the uniqueness of lived experiences. Together, the participants will pursue the question in a practice-oriented exchange: How can dance and theatre become an inclusive artistic practice throughout Saxony?

The Future Lab is aimed at dance and theatre makers, performers and activists with and without disabilities as well as at members of marginalised groups who are artistically active and at multipliers and organisers who are active in this field or wish to be active.

Together with the participants, we want to approach this question in workshops and labs on the topics of reception spaces, deviance, communities and authenticity. A special highlight of the day will be the performance Shool of Shame of TANZLABOR LEIPZIGin in cooperation with POLYMORA Inc.

The Future Lab is aimed at dance and theatre makers, performers and activists with and without disabilities as well as at members of marginalised groups who are artistically active, and at multipliers, organisers and cultural workers who are active in this field or wish to be active, and who support this artistic practice.

Workshop I: Reception rooms
Theatre Pedagogy | Sandra Rasch (Ramba Zamba Berlin)
After a theatre performance, the audience* usually talks about what they have seen. Or to put it in a complicated way: the art, which is presented on stage in the form of signs, is decoded by the audience after the performance. But what happens to the spectators when an inclusive ensemble presents something on stage? Is art then spoken of in the same way independently of the performing bodies? Or does the spectator decode what is seen in a different way in relation to the nature of the performing and acting bodies?

This workshop will provide an insight into the work of RambaZamba Theatre’s theatre pedagogy combined with practical exercises and theoretical approaches. The workshop also deals with the framework conditions and the inner attitude of the leaders as the core for the success of inclusive work.

Sandra Rasch studied Theatre Pedagogy (M.A.) and Theatre and Film Studies (B.A.). Since March 2018 she has been in charge of theatre pedagogy at the inclusive RambaZamba Theatre. Before that, she worked for five years at the Oldenburg State Theatre, where she developed plays with inclusive, diverse groups on political and socially relevant themes.

Workshop II: Communities (Part 1)
Dance | Bernhard Richarz (Danceable Berlin)
The workshop is based on an aesthetic of difference and makes it tangible and visible in dance. It is open to all who are curious to dance with the diversity in themselves and in others. Based on bodywork and technical dance elements, improvisation uses, stimulates and develops the ability to move freely. Previous dancing experience or disabilities of the body, the senses or any other kind are not necessary, but welcome.

Bernhard Richarz, Dr. med., lives in Berlin. As co-director of the initiative tanzfähig he organises dance, teaches contemporary dance and above all improvisation and is involved in various pieces as a dancer. As he lives with a disability from an early age due to a polio illness, he has acquired his own dance training by taking lessons with Alito Alessi, Adam Benjamin, Jenny Haack, matanicola, Heini Nukari and others.

11:00 – 13:00 | Dalcroze Hall
Workshop III: Deviance (Part 1)
Performance | Saša Asentić (Choreographer and Performer Berlin)
Saša Asentić studied agriculture and pedagogy at the University of Novi Sad/Serbia and continued his education in the field of performing arts in an autodidactic and informal way. He is a performance artist, choreographer and author and has also appeared in the USA, France, Austria, Belgium, Spain, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Poland, Lithuania, Romania, Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia.

Saša Asentić is the founder and program director of Per.Art, an NGO founded in 1999 dedicated to the production and promotion of performing arts in Serbia and the inclusion of the mentally handicapped through art projects.

Workshop IV: Authenticity
Organizational & Communication Structures | Gina Jeske & Anne Rieger (Sophiensæle Berlin)
Does “accessibility” even exist? In the workshop, we will explore together the questions of what barriers we encounter on the way to an inclusive artistic practice and what possibilities there are to dismantle them sustainably. How can corresponding structures be created or changed? Which partnerships make sense? How can we sensitize ourselves to the needs and wishes of a diverse group of artists and a diverse audience? On the basis of Sophiensæle’s practical experience in the fields of public relations, mediation and production management, we develop concrete strategies that promote a structural opening of institutions in the independent scene.

Anne Rieger is production manager of the project Making a Difference, sponsored by TANZPAKT Stadt Land Bund and the Senate Department for Culture and Europe. The eight Berlin institutions SOPHIENSÆLE, Tanzfabrik Berlin, Uferstudios, tanzfähig, Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz Berlin, TanzZeit, Diversity Arts Culture und Zeitgenössischer Tanz Berlin 2018 have launched this project. The central guideline of the project is the filling of artistic and non-artistic leading and expert positions, predominantly with people with disabilities, as real social equality is only created through participation in decision-making and creative power. Making a Difference thus aims to complement contemporary dance with an aesthetic of difference. The project runs until November 2021, when Anne Rieger was production manager of the London-based Candoco Dance Company. She also works as a freelance production manager and dramaturge with choreographer Annie Hanauer and performance artist and musician Christopher Brett Bailey.

Gina Jeske has been working in the Sophiensælen since August 2018 in the areas of press and public relations and mediation. Her tasks include the target-group-specific addressing of a diverse audience and the associated development of appropriate internal and external communication channels, the expansion of a cooperation network and the coordination of audio descriptions for blind and visually impaired visitors*. Before joining the Sophiensælen, Gina Jeske worked as an assistant dramaturge and director as well as in press and public relations at various cultural institutions, city theatres and in the independent scene.

SCHOOL OF SHAME
Performance | TANZLABOR LEIPZIG in cooperation with POLYMORA Inc. (Leipzig)
What are we ashamed of? For our bodies, our desires, our mistakes, our egos and successes. But who are we ashamed of? Shame seldom comes alone, shame needs an audience – and to overcome them, too. In a virtuosically bizarre musical performance between casting show and classroom, the five performers* of POLYMORA Inc. look their blind spots in the face, publicly shame themselves and disintegrate social systems of shame and shame.
As an intersectional collective with a focus on queerness and a mixed-abled approach, POLYMORA Inc. wants to make its artistic and political work accessible to as many people as possible. Three of the five artists* are working for the third time in cooperation with Tanzlabor Leipzig.
SCHOOL OF SHAME! is the first joint production. With contemporary dance and musical elements, shame and embarrassment are renegotiated and staged with low barriers through sign language and audio description.

Choreography and Performance | Jana Zöll, Jutta Tille, Aisha Konaté, Miriam Welk, Alexandra Schwartz
