In this performance, the Dance On Ensemble explores the work of Noa Eshkol, reconstructing her precise dance compositions based on the notation system she developed. Choreographer Noé Soulier contrasts this with his own work, which transposes the choreographer’s approach into the present day. This marks the first time her works have been performed by dancers outside the Noa Eshkol Chamber Dance Group. The performance is part of the Dance On series “Replies,” in which contemporary choreographers respond to 20th-century masterpieces from their own artistic perspectives.

Noa Eshkol

Noa Eshkol was a choreographer, dance educator, and textile artist. Together with Abraham Wachman, she developed the Eshkol-Wachman Movement Notation System and collaborated across disciplines with artists and scholars. Her approach to dance was characterized by a focus on the essential: by recognizing each movement and every body part in its full autonomy and complexity, she created a broad space for creative diversity in choreographic design. Her work continues to influence contemporary choreographic and performative practices to this day.

Mor Bashan

Mor Bashan is an archivist and head of the research department at the Noa Eshkol Foundation for Movement Notation, as well as a dancer with the Noa Eshkol Chamber Dance Group. As a researcher and performer, she combines practical bodily knowledge with a deep understanding of Noa Eshkol’s movement notation system. Through her work, she makes a significant contribution to the preservation, dissemination, and further development of Eshkol’s choreographic and scholarly legacy.

Noé Soulier

Noé Soulier explores choreography and dance in various contexts—on stage, in museums, and through theoretical work. His practice combines conceptual thinking with a deep engagement with movement and reflects his background in dance (CNSMD Paris, National Ballet School of Canada, P.A.R.T.S.) and philosophy (Sorbonne University, Paris). His works have been presented worldwide at venues including the Théâtre National de Chaillot (Paris), Sadler’s Wells (London), Performa (New York), and Tanz im August (Berlin). Since July 2020, he has been the director of the Cndc – Angers, which combines choreographic creation, graduate education, and a dance program.

Dance On Ensemble

The Dance On Ensemble was founded in 2015 by the Berlin-based cultural organisation Bureau Ritter and celebrates the artistic excellence of dancers over 40. In collaboration with internationally renowned choreographers and directors, including Rabih Mroué, Lucinda Childs, Meg Stuart and Jan Martens, the Dance On Ensemble develops a programme of innovative and challenging contemporary dance works. The aim is to create a solid foundation for a rich and ambitious repertoire for dancers aged 40 and over.
